We’re delighted to announce that Deetjen’s is now offering special programs that bring our rich history to life. Whether you’re a first time visitor or a longtime guest, these upcoming events are a wonderful way to connect more deeply with this historic place.

90th Anniversary Program Weekly Schedule
(March–May)

Tuesday

History Walking Tour

Standard history walking tour includes the history of the buildings and the stories behind the names.

Wednesday

Afternoon tea with women at dining table

History Tea & Stories of Big Sur and Deetjen’s Inn

Traditional Devonshire tea held in the dining room or library.

  • Historic photos and early guestbook excerpts.

  • Stories related to monthly theme

  • Changing monthly themes:

    • MARCH: Early settlers of Castro Canyon: The Castros

    • APRIL: The first Big Sur businesses and Highway One construction

    • MAY: Deetjen and Ms. Haight

Thursday

Workshops, Arts & Heritage Experiences

These change month-to-month, an example rotation:

  • Quilting Bee & Heritage Crafts

    • Traditional textile & quilting inspired by historic homestead techniques

  • Artist-in-Residence presentations

    • Sketching, plein-air photography, journaling, or nature writing

  • Restoration & Architecture Session

    • The Barn, the cabins, preservation practices.

Guest artists or historians rotate monthly.

Friday

Historic Talks, Journal Reading, Extended Walking Tours

Exhibits, oral histories, or archival displays in Library or open room.

  • Deetjen’s role in shaping Big Sur culture

  • Anecdotes from early employees, neighbors, and guests

Extended Walking Tours:

Final Friday of each month features:

A deeper version of the classic tour:

  • Extended route and photo archive stations

  • Tour of open rooms (if any)
